A handful of Europe’s biggest football clubs are doing their part to help aid the migrant worker crisis. Ligue 1 Champions Paris Saint-Germain are leading the way by donating one million euros ($1.12 million) to the United Nations’ refugee agency and a French non-profit association.
Four of the biggest clubs in England- Arsenal, Chelsea, Manchester City and Manchester United are giving to the cause as well. The quartet of Premier League giants have all signed up to donate €1 from every ticket sold in their Champions League contests, says the Daily Mirror.
Portugese club Porto and Schalke of the German Bundesliga also gave cash to charities aiding the current refugee crisis.
However, the efforts of PSG stands out above all as this issue really hits home for them. Migrants arrived in France Wednesday after an overnight bus trip from Germany, the first among around 1,000 that French President Francois Hollande pledged to receive from the neighboring country. The migrant workers are fleeing war and poverty in the Middle East and Africa to find a better life and peace in continental Europe.
PSG stated that their large financial donation is going towards the UNHCR and the Secours Populaire Francais in order to ”set up concrete solidarity projects in France and internationally.”
Way to go and do the right thing PSG.
