Manchester United midfielder and Vice Captain Michael Carrick is considering the idea of ending his time at Old Trafford. The reason why? Lack of a new contract. However, according to ESPN FC that is now changing, as Michael Carrick is moving much closer to…
“a fresh deal as they look to keep hold of the midfielder, a source close to the club has told ESPN FC.”
“Carrick, who turns 35 this summer and is out of contract, has seen talks over a new deal delayed as United wanted to resolve the club’s managerial situation before making a decision.”
Now with Louis van Gaal officially dismissed, and Jose Mourinho waiting in the wings, the first domino is in place for what will be a summer that will likely see a ton of changes coming to Old Trafford. The idea of retaining Van Gaal was thought to be adverse regarding the chances of keeping the Vice-Captain.
On top of that, keeping the Dutchman, in favor of hiring Mourinho, would not help the chances of bringing in big name transfer targets like Zlatan Ibrahimovic or Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang. At least that’s what conventional wisdom holds.
The ESPN FC piece goes on to say that “United are preparing to offer Carrick a one-year extension, just like they did last summer, with Mourinho giving it the green light.”
Michael Carrick, obviously, signed that one-year extension just last year that was offered Louis van Gaal’s first season as Manager. Today, Old Trafford denied that they have a pre-contract deal arranged with Mourinho, but the entire media world has been publishing stories that believe otherwise since Saturday.
