Manchester United and Italy corner defender Matteo Darmian made comments today that seemingly convey allegiance to country over club; perhaps. Or perhaps the United right back is speaking out of pure objectivity in regards to assessing football talent.
Darmian said that he believes his Italy teammate, Gianluigi Buffon, is a better goalkeeper than his United teammate David de Gea.
It’s a timely provocative comment as De Gea is currently coming off his worst international performance this week, and Darmian set to face De Gea and Spain in the European Championship knockout round on Monday. You got to love the public response De Gea made a couple days ago in the face of all that public criticism.
Darmian told Sport 360: “It’s great to play against David, he is one of the best goalkeepers in the world. Of course, it will be difficult to score, but we also have a great goalkeeper.”
“They are two of the best goalkeepers in the world and, yes, there are similarities between David and Gigi [Buffon], for sure. But I think that Gianluigi Buffon is the best goalkeeper of all time. For me as a defender I feel very lucky to play with them.”
