I’m not sure where this Man United starting XI projection began, but it’s currently making the rounds on social media. It’s a line-up composed entirely (with one exception at the goalkeeper spot) of players that were linked to United in transfer rumors or targeted by United this summer.
It’s a team of players who didn’t come or aren’t coming. The lone exception is David de Gea, obviously, as he is still a United player.

The line-up projection is clearly meant to be snarky, to poke fun at United, but all big clubs cast a very wide net in the summer transfer window. Every team with a lot of money goes after multiple targets, and of course, most of them don’t happen; for all clubs. For comparison sake, let’s look at how close this lineup is to the Man United starting XI “transfers that won’t happen” line-up that we made on May 24th. Then we have our starting 11 of players that could leave, published on May 23rd. By the way, here’s a video from TIME/SI on the top four contenders in the Premier League title race:
Also, here’s our line up prediction for tomorrow’s home game versus Newcastle.
