What a sad and devastating turn of events.
Shaw was just settling in at Old Trafford.
This season, he was finally finding a solid, consistent groove after enduring so many injury setbacks. Now he’ll have to endure yet another, and this one is indeed a doozy. At least it’s not as bad as it looked.
Shaw went down on a challenge from PSV Eindhoven center back Hector Moreno, and stayed on the ground for quite awhile. It was frightening to watch, and the serious, morose tone took over Philips Stadion for a long while.
The play happened in direct, plain view of the referee, but he refused to call it a foul. Obviously, it was a questionable call to say the least.
Originally, it was reported that Luke Shaw had suffered a broken leg. Now it’s confirmed as a double fracture. Initially, no one thought Shaw would be available again this season, but Manager Louis van Gaal gave a rough estimate of Shaw’s return possibly happening in six months.
“It’s awful,” Van Gaal said (transcript via Manchester Evening News). “The boy comes at 18 to Manchester, has a very difficult season & next season plays fantastic then this happens.
“I’m not a doctor, so I cannot say, but when you have a double fracture it is [out] for six months to see how it develops. When he came into the dressing room, he had an oxygen mask and was crying.
“He won’t play in the group stage, I don’t think. I hope he can play again this season.”
Luke Shaw was somehow able to get a positive public message out to his fans very soon after the injury. It’s truly amazing that he was able to find an optimistic attitude so soon after such a devastating incident. He thanked both United and Southampton supporters via his Twitter account.
Here’s Luke Shaw’s Tweet below:
Thank you everyone for your messages , words can't describe how gutted I am , my road to recovery starts now, I will come back stronger.
