Manchester United fans know very well what name they should often expect to see in a match preview injury report- Phil Jones.
The central defender has had quite an injury plagued career, and this year has been more of the same. In March, while on international break with England, Jones collided in training with Chris Smalling, and neither have played since. All of April, shelved for the duo!
Phil Jones suffered a broken toe; Chris Smalling a knee injury.
It’s possible one, or both could return for the season ends, but as of right now it’s hard to say. They might be done for the season, but whether or not they are, Mourinho sees high hopes for the duo in 2017-18.
Asked whether they would have a chance under him next season Mourinho said: “Of course they have. I hope this season.”
“It’s not just about them. It’s about the philosophy and mentality around them. Cautious. Cautious. Cautious. Just a cautious approach.
“It’s a profile, it’s the philosophy of work. Just that.”
Quite a few United players are out for the Manchester Derby tonight.
Obviously, Paul Pogba is the headliner, but there were a few other players with fitness updates revealed by Mourinho at his press conference a few hours ago (watch that here).
Ander Herrera faces a late fitness test but he’s overcome his ankle knock, and he’s in. Paul Pogba is out. Antonio Valencia is ready to go. Here is a link to the full injury report.
