Spain had a disastrous World Cup; that’s not breaking news. The defending champs were the first side to be eliminated, and it happened in humiliating fashion. But Juan Mata scored a goal, video below, as #ESP defeat Australia 3 to nil in their final game. Mata has 10 goals in 34 caps for Spain. So Mata has done his part for hi national team.
Unfortunately, his club team is dealing with a disastrous result now too. In the preseason, Juan Mata said today that scoring more goals will be a priority for him this season at Old Trafford.
“At times during last season there were hard moments for everyone but I always tried to do what I do which is to score goals and set my team-mates up,” he told the club’s official website.
“I scored six goals last year and I am looking forward to hopefully do it again and again this season.” on August 11th.
He’s done his part at Old Trafford this season, but he’s also been benched. He was taken out of the starting lineup for the match at newly promoted Leicester City. United blew a 3-1 second half lead to drop the match 5-3 to the Foxes.
Juan Mata, who came on for Radamel Falcao in the second half at the King Power Stadium, said he had spent “a few hours” trying to come up with the words to describe his disappointment at the defeat.
“After a whole week waiting for the match I could not imagine a Sunday like this,” the Spaniard said.
“The way back from Leicester to Manchester on the bus seemed really long. I keep thinking about how we lost a game that was under control.”
“It’s really tough to score three goals away and come back home with no points. On our way back to Manchester I was thinking about what had happened and felt so disappointed as all those that came with us to the stadium.
“Honestly, I feel very sorry that the weekend ended up for our fans in such a sad way.”
“There is time during the week to analyse what happened and learn from our mistakes so as not to make them again,” Juan Mata added before closing with a statement of promise towards the future.
“Now we will play two consecutive games at Old Trafford that we want to win for our fans. We will put in our best efforts, you can be sure of that.”
“I hope to be in a better mood next Sunday.”
Yes, don’t we all Juan Mata, don’t we all.
Of course, Juan Mata’s days at Old Trafford could be numbered.
Gary Neville: “I don’t think Mata has a long term future at United”
