Jose Mourinho to Manchester United is really going to happen, sooner rather than later, but United still deny reports that they have a deal in place. No one in the football world believes that though. We’ve also heard, over the course of the season that United could potentially face some competition for his services from Paris Saint-Germain.
It was reported by the Daily Mail that United paid Mourinho £4 million not to take a job elsewhere as they decided the fate of Van Gaal.
Wow! That’s great work if you can get it! Being paid not to take a job. There have been unconfirmed reports that Paris Saint-Germain had made an official approach. A United spokesman told The Times that no such arrangement existed: “It is completely untrue that there was any pre-contract agreement or any payment to any person in connection with the manager’s position.”
Former United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel had some rather interesting and colorful words on the topic of recruiting Mourinho.
Schmeichel told BBC Radio 5 Live: “Mourinho is not an easy call to make for the owners and leaders because if he was the right man, he would have been picked before.
“He has fallen out with a director of football at a club, a president, a team doctor. He has done things that are not in the way Manchester United wants the football club to run.
“All these issues would have been brought up and I am sure it will have been run by Alex Ferguson and Bobby Charlton. Without them saying ‘yes’ to him, it would not happen. Therefore, if he comes in he is a good choice.
“He will be prepared and ready to do it but he has to go back to the values of the football club — a very strong team consisting of exciting players which are creating chances and scoring goals. All that has been missing.
“Now they have a guy that is supposed to be the biggest manager in the world, the one that really could save Manchester United. It has been a brave decision but one that is long overdue.”
