Is Marouane Fellaini the player to add the steel that Manchester United need in their midfield and become provider for Rooney and Van Persie?
David Moyes seems to be hell bent on taking at least one player from the ranks of the Catalan giants Barcelona, initially the media speculated that United would sign Thiago. Thiago subsequently followed his ex manager Pep Guardiola and signed for Bayern Munich, so Moyes turned his attention to Cesc Fabregas, but that pursuit seems doomed to failure (at the moment). No doubting that Thiago and Fabregas would have been fantastic acquisitions for United, but as I have commented before are they really what United need at the moment?
Not 50 miles away down the East Lancs is a player that Moyes knows well that offers a great deal of what United need. Marouane Fellaini isn’t the marquee signing many United fans are looking for, but he does have a number of the attributes the United midfield is crying out for. Fellaini is an uncompromising player that won’t turn his back on a fight, he has shown against all the big clubs, United included that he can change games and get goals. At Everton he has been used primarily as a forward, but his natural position is in midfield and that makes him perfect for United. Technically gifted players like Thiago and Fabregas are great to have and many see the Barcelona “style” as the way forward. United already have a number of technically gifted players, but every now and then you need a battering ram. Yaya Toure was sold by Barclona because his style of play didn’t suit the nature of their game, but he is the hub that Manchester City revolve around. Fellaini isn’t Yaya Toure, but he would add that steel in midfield.
All United fans crave a marquee signing, but ultimately winning games is what counts and a player that helps United win games is far more important.
Everton may well have warned Moyes and United off returning for their start players, but Moyes now has to look at his own future and strengthening the team he now manages and that may well mean weakening the team he has left.
