What a remarkable feel-good journey it’s been for Manchester United goalkeeper David de Gea. From desperately wanting out, and a move back to his hometown, to the transfer deadline day debacle to settling in at United and signing a contract extension.
All in the span of a few weeks. Now you can add “United Captaincy” if only briefly to that list of eventful De Gea developments. De Gea has expressed just how proud he was of this moment.

This happened yesterday when Captain Wayne Rooney came off during the Red Devils 3-0 demolishing of Ipswich Town in the League Cup yesterday. Vice-captain and midfielder Michael Carrick didn’t play yesterday. The next in line Defender Chris Smalling (or Mike Smalling has Louis van Gaal famously called him this summer) had already subbed off. Therefore, the arm band went to De Gea.
