Fabrizio Birimbelli is an artist based in Rome, who’s created a series of eye-catching portraits of global football superstars depicted in other historical periods. Birimbelli has re-imagined the biggest stars of the European Championships 2016 and Copa America Centenario as figures of the high Italian Renaissance, 19th Century military heroes, and much much more.
Here you can see Fabrizio’s depiction of England/Manchester United Captain Wayne Rooney and Germany skipper Bastian Schweinsteiger as 1800s era Generals.
You can check out Gareth Bale, Cristiano Ronaldo, Gianluigi Buffon and many others by looking at the whole collection. It’s viewable on Birimbelli’s Instagram feed here. This is all very reminiscent of a 2014 promotional campaign for Sky Sports 5, in which talented mimic John Myatt depicted the stars of the 2014-15 UEFA Champions League in garb from another period.
Here you can check out longtime Liverpool leader Steven Gerrard portrayed in the style of Joshua Reynolds’ Portrait of General John Burgoyne.
