Liverpool FC have a new official number one. Loris Karius has started the past five games, and now he’ll remain at the top of the goalkeeper depth chart, replacing Simon Mignolet. Liverpool Manager Jurgen Klopp confirmed that he spoke with both men and that Mignolet took the demotion like a professional.
Klopp did also confirm though that Mignolet will start against Tottenham Hotspur in the EFL Cup tomorrow night.
Asked at his news conference today whether Mignolet would return for Tuesday night, Klopp said: “The chance is 100 percent.
“That’s only if nothing happens in training — but then he will play 100 percent.”
Klopp also then spun the switch into an example of being loaded at the position, not that Mignolet is bad and Karius good.
“This is the ranking, if you want, in this moment, Loris is the No. 1 and Simon is in this moment the No. 2,” he added.
“We’ve had a few talks about it because I didn’t have the perfect answer for him [Mignolet].
“I couldn’t say: ‘You are bad and he is good, that’s why he’s playing.’ This is what I call a luxury problem.
“We had to make a decision, and I made it. Of course he was not happy about this, but he is a very good professional.
“He’s still hard working and improving and doing all that he needs to do.”
Loris Karius moved over from Mainz in the summer, and unfortunately missed the first five games of his Anfield career due to a broken hand. However, he’s riding high today! And for the time being.
