When Jose Mourinho assumed the reigns at Old Trafford in May of 2016 it initiated a series events that led to Ryan Giggs leaving Manchester United.
Giggs admitted today that there was no offer on the table for him to stay on, and thus his 29 years with the club came to an end.
It obviously hit him very hard, and just last month Giggs admitted that he had to see a psychiatrist in order to help him adjust to post Man United life. Making the adjustment even more difficult for Ryan Giggs is the fact that Premier League clubs just aren’t calling him for interviews when a managerial vacancy opens up.
His name has been linked to other clubs when jobs opened up, but the 43-year-old admits that only one club, Swansea City, has called him.
He’s just not being sought after by other clubs and it turns out he wasn’t offered a position at his home club either. It had been previously suggested that Giggs had a chance to stay, at least in some capacity, at Old Trafford when Mourinho took over. Giggs said the opportunity wasn’t presented to him, despite the two years he served as Louis van Gaal’s right hand man.
“There was no offer from Jose Mourinho. No offer. It was my choice to go,” Giggs told the Manchester Evening News.
“As soon as Louis was going I had made my decision to go. I had done two years and I wanted to do three years under Louis. It didn’t happen. That was my plan to do my three years and see what happened after that.”
“Unfortunately, that was cut short. It happens. That’s football. But I didn’t really feel I could go on at the club in any other capacity apart from manager.”
Giggs filled in for four games as caretaker manager in 2014 after David Moyes was sacked. Ryan Giggs won two and drew one of the four matches that he was in charge.
