RIP Nelson Mandela, Liverpool FC tweets photo with deceased hero

Hero, former South African President and icon of peace Nelson Mandela passed away at age 95, it was just announced. South Africa President Jacob Zuma, who made public the death of the anti-apartheid hero, said as a young man he protested apartheid–one of his first political acts.

The legacy of Nelson Mandela is a free and democratic South Africa. President Barack Obama remembered Nelson Mandela as a man “who took history in his hands and bent the arc of moral universe towards justice. God bless his memory.”

The official Twitter account of Manchester United tweeted out this picture of Mandela with Sir Alex Ferguson shortly after Mandela’s passing was announced.

Shortly after the news of his passing went public, the official account of Liverpool F.C. tweeted this picture with Nelson Mandela.

“You’ll never walk alone,” the slogan and mantra of Liverpool states. As you can see, the picture has been retweeted and favorited thousands of times.

“We will not likely see the likes of Nelson Mandela again,” Obama said. “..Never discount the difference that one person can make,” Obama said.
