Real Madrid President Florentino Perez has thrown some cold water on the fire of transfer rumors between his club and Manchester United which have been burning up the internet lately. Perez played down the idea of an acquiring United goalkeeper David De Gea finally, even though that narrative has once again returned in full force this summer.
“Will De Gea leave United and return to his hometown Madrid?” stories are a summer transfer window tradition unlike any other.
Perez also said that the club has received no bids for Cristiano Ronaldo, Alvaro Morata or James Rodriguez.
Perez says his club “have not received any offers for Cristiano, Morata or James as some media have stated. Our priority is to keep our current core of players, and that is why we are not going to make any movements.”
So, all those wild transfer rumor stories you’ve seen, about De Gea and major cash going to Madrid for Morata and Ronaldo? No, those stories are probably not true.
However, Perez did say something that contradicts Morata’s agent, Juanma Lopez, who confirmed that United have offered his client. In an interview with calciomercato.com, he also said the ball is currently in the court of Real.
“They are a club with great glamour, a very interesting option,” Lopez said. “I can say that their proposal is a very, very important one and now the decision rests with Real.”
This came after Morata made a couple social media moves that got the football world buzzing.
Morata removed the phrase “Real Madrid player” from his biography on both his official verified Instagram and Twitter accounts.
He also “liked” a post plugging a report claiming he was recruiting Gareth Bale and James Rodriguez on the prospect of leaving Real and coming with him to United.
Watch this space on that one, so moving on to United’s #1, Perez said: “For the time being, we haven’t spoken to De Gea.
“The last time I spoke to him was when that [failed transfer] happened. Two years ago we had that fax misfortune. It [the contract] arrived two minutes late.”
“Last year we had a possibility that we didn’t take, and now we have no agreement with Manchester United to sign him. The truth is that we have great goalkeepers. I love Keylor Navas and the truth is that, back in 2015, I didn’t know him as I do now.”
