Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has guided his team to the best-ever start to a Premier League season, but still maintains that his side can do even more. He hailed the impressive performance of his team in a 3-1 home over Arsenal, but claims the Citizens still have another level which can be reached.
While many are ready to declare the Premier League title race over now (Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp did a few weeks ago), Pep Guardiola says there is still lots of season left to be played.
Manchester City have acquired 31 points this season, good for eight ahead of the next two teams, Manchester United and Tottenham Hotspur. City boasts a goal differential of plus-31, which is a whopping +13 on United.
“It is obvious we score a lot of goals. I can’t remember if I started that well in any of my previous teams,” Guardiola said in his post match news conference. “We could have scored five or six today. We just needed to be more clinical.”
“Last season we were only able to win twice against the big teams: at Old Trafford against United and here against Arsenal,” he continued.
“If you want to win the Premier League against Liverpool, United, Arsenal, Tottenham and Chelsea, you have to win, especially at home because they will be so tough away.
“If we continue in that rhythm, it will help to win more games. If you are stable and not thinking stupid things, it helps to win more. Our position is good going into our next two games away.”
After the international break, Guardiola and company will next travel to Leicester City, to take on the Foxes in league play.
Pep Guardiola has won 22 trophies since the start of his managing career, which includes Barcelona and Bayern Munich. He is considered by a number of players, other managers and commentators to be amongst the best in the world. For him to say that this could be the hottest start to a season that he’s ever accomplished really speaks volumes about this current Sky Blues side.
