Manchester United Captain Michael Carrick is set to retire at the end of the season, and then move on to his next career, as a coach. United boss Jose Mourinho confirmed it Friday at a news conference, where he indicated that Carrick will have a first team coaching position.
“I think he will play again,” Mourinho said today at his press conference ahead of United’s trip to the Turf Moor to face Burnley. “He has had a few months without even training so now he is in his second week of training with the team.”

“He could be a very important player for us. I think the decision to (retire) at the end of the season and not last week, I think is a good decision for the team and a good decision for him to finish playing football and not because he is injured or with some problem.
“So we are all happy and in the end of the season I expect him to join (the staff), unless he changes his mind.”
The 36-year-old Englishman has been plagued by injury and illness issues this season, primarily dealing with an irregular heart rhythm. Thus, he’s been limited to only one appearance this season, back in September’s League Cup match against Burton.
So it’s the last hurrah this season now for Michael Carrick, a victory lap, if you will.
He’s certainly earned it as the midfielder has accomplished oh so much during his career at Old Trafford.
