Manchester United back-up and Argentina #1 Sergio Romero has signed on to stay at Old Trafford until 2021. He had just one year left on his previous deal, but the club announced an extension on Sunday for the man sandwiched between David de Gea and Joel Pereira on the Red Devils depth chart.
A statement attributed to Sergio Romero reads:
“I am delighted to have signed a new contract. Who wouldn’t want to be at the biggest club in the world? We have great goalkeepers here and we are always learning from each other. Of course, it was a very proud moment for me and my family to be part of the Europa League final, and I am looking forward to helping the team build on last season’s success in 2017/18.”
The statement representing José Mourinho says as follows:
“Sergio is a great goalkeeper and professional. He had a good season and outstanding performances, especially in our Europa League success. Sergio deserves his contract, and for Manchester United to have Sergio and David is amazing in such an important role.”
Romero established himself as the keeper of choice in the Europa League, a huge role as United’s claiming the tournament title propelled them back into Champions League. Sergio Romero was the #1 for United in the semi-finals and the final. He didn’t see action in United’s rout of L.A. Galaxy in the preseason friendly opener, but Mourinho promised we’ll see a full half of Sergio Romero in the next two exhibition matches.
“In the second match, David does not play,” Mourinho told the media this week.
“We play the kid (Pereira) for 45 and Romero for 45. The third match against Man City, we don’t play Joel. We will play David for 45 and Romero for 45.”
