Everton striker Romelu Lukaku will undergo his Manchester United medical in Los Angeles, where he is currently on vacation, and finalize his transfer.
That’s according to The Guardian, Daily Star, The Sun, The Express, and very likely many more outlets. It appears the £75 million deal, news of which leaked early yesterday, is rapidly progressing towards official status. United will arrive in southern California on Sunday, and Lukaku will soon reportedly be joining them.
United will then commence their five match summer preseason tour in the USA. Lukaku has been on holiday with friend and Red Devils midfielder Paul Pogba, with whom he shares an agent, Mino Raiola.
Lukaku also posted a photo of himself with Pogba, as well as Serge Ibaka of the NBA’s Toronto Raptors. Lukaku was supposed to fly back to England to report to Everton training, but has opted to forgo that, stay in L.A. and join up with his new team.
The Guardian writes that Manchester United Manager Jose Mourinho is: “intent that Lukaku should be confirmed as United’s second summer signing as soon as possible,” and that Mourinho decided getting the medical done in Los Angeles was the best way to get the deal closed.
Mourinho previously coached Lukaku at Chelsea, and although he did sell him away from Stamford Bridge, he remains a huge fan of the Belgian. Mourinho made him his number one transfer target this summer, potentially poaching him away from the club that sacked him in December 2015, and thought they were likely bringing their former player back.
With this deal getting finalized and Diego Costa on his way out, Chelsea now have to figure out how to resolve an impending void at the striker position.
