According to multiple reports, Manchester United are closing in on a contract extension for manager Jose Mourinho, and an announcement could come very soon. The BBC reports that: “Talks have progressed well and it is now just a matter of time before Mourinho commits to remain at Old Trafford beyond the expiry of his present deal in 2019.”
Meanwhile ESPN FC claims their sources are also saying a Mourinho extension is imminent, spotlighting the news “first reported by The National, he is set to sign an extension before entering the final year of his contract that would keep him at Old Trafford for another three years until 2021.”
Mourinho replaced Louis van Gaal in May of 2016, shortly after the Dutchman won his first and only trophy (the FA Cup title). In his first season on the job Mourinho led United to the League Cup title, the Community Shield and the first UEFA Europa League title in club history, and with it a return back to the Champions League.
There has been a ton of speculation about Mourinho’s future at the club lately, and it started with his openly praising Paris Saint-Germain. Later came reports that he was on his way out soon/wanted to leave, which the Portugese labeled as “garbage news” at a press conference earlier this month (as opposed to the phrase “fake news” which Donald Trump consistently likes to repeat).
Speculation was also further fueled by the 55-year-old complaining about his transfer market war chest, and the fact that he still lives in a hotel, and not at a more permanent address in Manchester.
Mourinho told people not to read too much into that last one by saying he’s lazy.
