So many heroes this afternoon for Manchester United, we don’t even know where to start. In a 4-0 route of West Ham United, which was even more lopsided than it sounds, everybody stepped up. Obviously, there’s striker Romelu Lukaku, who bagged a brace, and an assist in his Red Devils debut.
Another summer signing, midfielder Nemanja Matic, was described by some as the best player on the pitch Sunday.
Goalkeeper David de Gea registered a clean sheet. Midfielder Paul Pogba achieved both a goal and an assist. Forward Anthony Martial accomplished the same.
Winger Henrik Mkhitaryan had a couple of assists, while Marcus Rashford got one. Simply put, it was all position groups getting it done at every level. It was quality all around, and it’s the first time we’ve really seen this (at least on a level like this) in a league game from United in the post Sir Alex Ferguson era. United won possession 55%-45% and shots 22-9. They put six on target while the Hammers could manage to put just one on goal.
No wonder Jose Mourinho is so excited about this season. He’s ready to “go for it” and it showed in the Premier League season opener.
