Paul Pogba will serve the second of his three match ban tomorrow night when his Manchester United teammates host A.F.C. Bournemouth. With his forced days off, the Frenchman has the chance to joint the Beyond the Pitch podcast, and reflect on #Pogback.
It was the football story of summer 2016- Pogba returning to United for a then world record £89.3 million. The deal was certainly the best of times for his agent Mino Raiola, and it polarized opinion throughout the international football community.
Pogba had been heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid, and the midfielder was asked if Los Blancos were really his first choice.
“To be honest, I’m being honest with you, Real Madrid came to me and I was thinking to go there, and I was thinking to go to Manchester United too,” Paul Pogba answered. “but I always felt it in my heart.”
“My heart told me to come back here. I don’t know why, I didn’t know what was going to happen, but I did it, and I don’t regret. I never regret my choice.”
It was definitely a no lose choice- go to the club that’s been deemed the world’s wealthiest (United), or the one that proudly brandishes the world’s most powerful label (Madrid). Obviously, Pogba decided to return to Old Trafford and he’s served as club captain on at least one occasion.
It’s possible that Pogba could be wearing the captain’s armband with more frequency moving forward. The current club captain, Michael Carrick, is transitioning towards retirement, and could become an assistant coach soon.
When it was mentioned that some United supporters are in favor of his becoming a club captain, Pogba responded:
“I would be really pleased to hear that.”
“For me, just wearing the shirt…I always give 100 (percent). I want to win.
“I came back for a reason, just to put Manchester United where they belong, the place where they belong. I’m sure we can do that. I want to give my best until we arrive where Manchester wants to arrive.”
