Manchester United are through to the UEFA Europa League Final, having just eliminated Spanish side Celta Vigo today. The Red Devils went up 1-0 early (on the strength of a Marouane Fellaini goal) in this all important Game 2 of the UEL Semi-Final, but conceded the equalizer in the 85′.
United failed to finish the job and find the second scoring strike, but in the end it ultimately didn’t matter too much as MUFC book their tickets to Stockholm anyway, via their 2-1 advantage on aggregate.
They will take on Ajax May 24th in the Swedish capital. Get your tickets and/or make your plans for the Europa Final now.
In his postgame interview, United Manager Jose Mourinho lamented his club’s failure to kill off the game.
It’s true that United certainly had plenty of chances to make this contest uninteresting in the end, but alas, left their fans biting their nails as the Red Devils just didn’t close the deal properly.
“We were the best team in the first leg but we never kill, we never score goals related to the chances we have. It was an open game at home, all the pressure on our side,” Mourinho told BT Sport in his postgame interview
“They were completely free of responsibility and gave us a very hard match. We suffered until the end and it was open until the last second. The boys gave everything they had. I’m really pleased for them.”
“After 14 matches we are in the final. If we win the Europa League, I am more than happy. It would be amazing.”
In the rich history or MUFC, they have never won the Europa League final, but in less than two weeks, the chance awaits. With it comes a berth in UEFA Champions League, so the stakes will be high.
