With Wayne Rooney headed back to Everton, the Manchester United captaincy was an open position. The current Vice-Captain, midfielder Michael Carrick, will now assume the position in what could be his final season. Carrick played last season on a one year deal, and in May signed a new one-season contract that will keep him at Old Trafford until 2018.
Michael Carrick scored in his testimonial match on June 4 as the 2008 Man United XI played the All Stars XI to a 2-2 draw.
This will be his 12th year with the club, as the 35-year-old arrived from Tottenham Hotspur in 2006. In response to being handed the captain’s armband for 2017-18 he tweeted this statement:
I'm privileged to be captain of this incredible football club @manutd, I love the place and I'll give everything to achieve more success ? pic.twitter.com/8BbTe9Jqo0

It’s no secret that United are heavily pursuing a long term replacement for Michael Carrick this summer. The first target was rumored to be Chelsea’s Nemanja Matic, but given that United swooped in and signed Romelu Lukaku, Stamford Bridge’s number one transfer target, one shouldn’t expect that deal to happen any time soon.
Thus, United are reportedly pursuing Tottenham Hotspur star Eric Dier, which could also be a challenging deal to close as Spurs don’t want to sell.
