Former Manchester United winger Memphis Depay, one of the bigger flops in club history, says he would have succeeded at Old Trafford, if given the chance. The first 2015 summer transfer window buy, the leading scorer in the Dutch Eredivisie was brought up from PSV Eindhoven by countryman Louis van Gaal.
His first season was a disaster, as he never performed well on the pitch. Off the pitch, his lifestyle raised red flags among some members of the Manchester United community.
When Jose Mourinho took over, there was simply no place at all anywhere for Memphis Depay and he was sold to Lyon in January. Memphis Depay spoke out today, saying that he would have succeeded if given more playing time.
“In the first season, I didn’t contribute enough,” Memphis told L’Equipe. “But I really believe you need a year to succeed in the Premier League, it’s the fastest league in the world. The second, I had my self-belief back, but I didn’t play.
“It’s then that you look at yourself in the mirror and you ask yourself a lot of questions: ‘Am I not good enough?’ It was really tough. To stay positive, you have to be very strong mentally. That experience made me grow up and is useful to me today.”
