It continues to be a very exciting summer at Manchester United, with plenty of topics to discuss. What offseason, right?
So let’s take a spin through the latest news and notes items making the rounds on the internet today. You know what the top stories are today- World Cup wins for England and Belgium in Group in G play.
-United striker Romelu Lukaku bagged a brace for Belgium today, scoring in the 69′ and 75′ as the Red Devils cruised to a 3-0 rout of Panama. Lukaku certainly didn’t fail today, but in a very revealing interview, the 25-year-old said that some Belgians want to see him fail.
The BBC writes that Lukaku “feels many Belgium supporters do not appreciate him and are unaware of the poverty of his childhood.”
“If you weren’t with me when I had nothing, then you can’t really understand me,” he said. “When I went to Chelsea and I wasn’t playing, I heard them laughing at me. When I got loaned out to West Brom, I heard them laughing at me.”
“But it’s cool. Those people weren’t with me when we were pouring water in our cereal.”
You can read the very personal essay penned by Lukaku over at The Players Tribune.
Marcus Rashford established himself as a striker when he first burst onto the scene with United under Louis van Gaal. However, Van Gaal’s successor Jose Mourinho has moved him away from a central forward role, and has instead been using him on the wing. Rashford believes that playing on the left and right is helping him grow and develop.
“I think that my hunger is always wanting to score goals and, definitely, down the middle you get more opportunities to do so,” he told reporters ahead of England’s 2-1 World Cup opening win over Tunisia (quotes via Manchester Evening News).
“But I know to become the all-round model of a striker you have to play wide too. You can’t do one without the other. You have to understand what the other position wants, in terms of service and all that.
“So playing in different positions is definitely a positive, not a negative. You must have that mindset.
“We’re all students of the game. There’s nothing that you can’t learn about the game. I learn new things every day.
“Coming to the World Cup is a new experience and I would never shy away from a new experience. I would always prefer to embrace it.”
-United and England winger Jesse Lingard was trolled pretty hard on social media today, over his wayward shooting display. Other than that he put in a fine performance however. The Daily Express has a collection of some of the more standout tweets.
