It’s widely thought that Manchester United have three or four players on their summer shopping list this summer, and the positions they covet are striker, winger, holding midfielder and central defense. Conventional wisdom holds that Executive Vice President Ed Woodward will give Manager Jose Mourinho all the resources he needs to get those needs taken care of.
Now it’s just a matter of closing the deals, and former United striker Dwight Yorke sees no issue there.
“United are obviously looking to add to the squad. We know that — it is not a secret,” he told Sky Sports in a recent interview.
“I think that Man United being the richest club in the world and in the Champions League as well, things are looking up. We can attract all the players. Now that we are in the Champions League, I think that we are in a position to strike.”
United had the mother of all summer transfer windows in 2016, and that was without the added advantage of UEFA Champions League football as a recruiting tool. Now with the Red Devils returning to Europe, this summer could be even bigger.
The first need they filled was at central defense, as United’s first finalized 2017 summer transfer window addition came in the form of Victor Lindelof. In the midfield, the solution could be Nemanja Matic, or possibly Fabinho (who made some remarks yesterday that will certainly put United at high alert).
At the striker position, United badly need a replacement for the rehabilitating and departing Zlatan Ibrahimovic. That could and should be Real Madrid man Alvaro Morata, an addition that is reportedly very close to being sealed.
Dwight Yorke also sees the team adding three or four players, and with that bolstering, finally returning to league title contention, something that hasn’t really happened since Sir Alex Ferguson retired.
“I believe that come the start of the season we will get three or four quality players in to make sure we are competitive enough and raring to try and win the Premier League.”
