Manchester United roared back from a 2-0 second half deficit at Crystal Palace today to emerge victorious 3-2 in a result that was described as “amazing,” in numerous ways by manager Jose Mourinho. Nemanja Matic, one of Mourinho’s most trusted players, was the unlikely provider of the game-winning goal, as he scored for the first time in a Red Devils shirt tonight.
After the match, Matic revealed what Jose Mourinho told his team at halftime. The Portugese told his team they needed to do more, and that although he was happy with their fight, it was just not enough. After the match, Mourinho said in his television interviews that the comeback victory was “amazing” on many dimensions.
“They also deserve congratulations because a match like this is only possible with two teams,” Jose Mourinho said.
“Also three teams, because the referee maybe one mistake here or there but the intention to let the game go, don’t give too many fouls, keep the intensity of the game. He also has these responsibilities in this match.”
“Fantastic match for the people in front of the screen and at the stadium, difficult match for me because my team made so many mistakes. We had amazing attitude and had very good quality football in the second half, but we made so many defensive mistakes and I’m not just speaking of my defenders.”
“Amazing football match, amazing comeback, and very important victory for us because we have nine points left and we have nine points to fifth which is not amazing but okay.”
It would have been rather embarrassing for United to have fallen tonight at Selhurst Park, as Palace are currently 17th in the table and in danger of relegation.
Instead United will have an emotional crest to ride heading into their rivalry grudge match versus Liverpool next weekend.
