Marcus Rashford vs Anthony Martial– it’s a fun debate that’s pleasantly starting to rage within the Manchester United community. As long as both young forwards continue to produce, the argument over who manager Jose Mourinho should start will likely continue. Rashford was in the first team for both of United’s Premier League games so far this season, which were both very convincing 4-0 drubbings of the opponent.
Marcus Rashford has not scored this season, but he has one assist and three shots on target. Martial came on as a late substitute and earned a lot of praise for scoring in both games.
He also chipped in an assist in week one. Is it time to drop Rashford, and instead insert Martial into the starting XI? Club legend and Sky pundit Gary Neville says Mourinho should not do that, and it would be unfair to the 19-year-old Englishman.
The co-owner of Salford City told Sky Sports: “Martial has been devastating when coming off the bench but there’s no doubt he’s coming on against teams that are tired.
“He’s a brilliant finisher, his composure is brilliant. It’d be unfair for him to come in at the expense of Rashford, if you look at his work, his dribbles, his sprints.”
Overall, it’s certainly a nice problem to have, a potential embarrassment of riches at forward, a position group that should become even deeper once Zlatan Ibrahimovic officially resigns and joins the team in mid-season.
