He’s one of the most iconic players in German football history, but Bastian Schweinsteiger has still been a massive flop at Manchester United. When United released their fiscal year results this past September 12th, there were many interesting revelations.
The most news-worthy was the write-off of a £6.7 million contract- the one belonging to Bastian Schweinsteiger. It’s worth mentioning that £6.7 million would be a club record signing, or very close to it for many clubs.
Under the ‘exceptional items’ section of United’s annual results, it listed a sum of £6.7million ‘related to a registrations’ impairment charge regarding a reduction in the carrying value of a player no longer considered to be a member of the first team playing squad’.
It is understood Schweinsteiger is that individual and could not be included as an asset as it may give an unfair impression to investors.
That all changed today, as the redemption of Schweinsteiger was officially confirmed via his being restored and re-classified as a cost on the financial ledger.
United Executive Vice President Ed Woodward gave his annual conference call to investors today, and the fiscal disclosure revealed Schweinsteiger to be a £4.8 million “cost.”
(Woodward also touched on the summer transfer window a little bit today, and also covered the team’s #1 position in shirt sales, upcoming summer preseason tour and a new app pertaining to the club.)
Bastian Schweinsteiger is now on the Europa League player list, and has been deemed by Manager Jose Mourinho as a legitimate “option” again. The former German National Team Captain is now training with the Red Devils first team, after being long frozen out and relegated to training with the U23s.
In spite of all this, Schweinsteiger remains a loyal soldier. He’s United’s most enthusiastic and most devote cheerleader:
