Manchester United got their second goal, in their win over Brighton & Hove Albion yesterday, off of a free kick sent by centre midfielder Scott McTominay. The final touch came off Brighton midfielder Davy Propper, and thus it was ruled an own goal.
Later, the young Scotsman, who’s been a solid mainstay for a midfield in disarray, injured his ankle, and now there are fears he could be out of commission for awhile. According to Metro.co.uk, United fear that McTominay “could miss around four weeks of action after an initial diagnosis.”
At the very least, McTominay will almost certainly miss Scotland’s fixtures against Cyprus and Kazakhstan this international break.
In his post match interview on Sunday, Ole Gunnar Solskjær offered the following:
“He [McTominay] went over on his ankle. It’s a painful one. I had one and was out for eight weeks but sometimes back in two. Scan tomorrow. Scotty is not one for rolling around.”
United have yet to publicly comment on the results of this scan, but if he is gone for four weeks, then he could miss five matches, including the Manchester Derby against City early next month and another big six league fixture against Tottenham Hotspur.
United are already hurting at the position group, with Nemanja Matic a non-factor and Paul Pogba out until December.
McTominay has been a very pleasant surprise for the Red Devils, and if he’s gone for a significant amount of time, then his absence will certainly have a major adverse impact.
