Ryan Giggs has accomplished a lot as a player at Manchester United. It’s hard to find a Premier League player who has accomplished more than Giggs at any club. However, as a manager he has yet to accomplish much. He still needs to cut his teeth somewhere and work his way up the ladder.
He believes Southampton FC could and should be that place. There doesn’t seem to be any word yet that the feeling is mutual.
Since Southampton sacked Claude Puel on Wednesday, lists of candidates to be his successor have come out, and you most likely won’t find the name Ryan Giggs on any of them.
United legend Ryan Giggs wants to ‘kickstart his managerial career’ at Saints, according to a national newspaper. The Daily Mail state that Giggs fancies replacing Claude Puel at St Mary’s to take his ‘first steps into full-time management’.
But, considering his lack of experience, it seems a very unlikely appointment. The 43-year-old has been linked with many jobs without finding employment and there is no indication that Saints are looking at the Welshman.
Giggs filled in for four games as caretaker manager in 2014 after David Moyes was sacked. Ryan Giggs won two and drew one of the four matches that he was in charge. He also served as the #2 man to Louis van Gaal during his two years on the job at United, but many regarded that role to be somewhat lacking in true value and genuine responsibility.
Thomas Tuchel, the former Borussia Dortmund boss, has turned down the job.
So the short list to fill the Southampton vacancy now consists of Frank de Boer and Mauricio Pellegrino. Former Leicester City manager Claudio Ranieri, who was sacked this season, less than a year removed from a league title, was also in the mix, but he instead took the gig at Nantes
