It may only be the pre-season, but Manchester United still have a bit of a battle against the injury bug. Midfielder Ander Herrera got injured against Real Madrid yesterday, and it’s unknown right now how much time he could miss. United Manager Jose Mourinho discussed what he does know right now about Herrera’s injury in the postgame news conference, and you can read his quotes over at this link.
Another midfielder, Juan Mata, took a knock in the friendly against Real Salt Lake, but it’s not serious and he is expected to return soon.
Additionally, you have the long term injuries to three players- defender Luke Shaw, defender/midfielder Ashley Young and defender Marcos Rojo. All three joined the squad for the preseason exhibition tour of the United States, but they will not be available for the August 8 Super Cup against Real Madrid, nor the Premier League season opener versus West Ham United at home on August 13.
“They have no chance for the beginning of the Premier League season. Luke Shaw is the first one to recover, Marcos will be last and Ash will be in between,” said Mourinho on Sunday.
“Luke is September, Young is October and Rojo is December, or maybe January.”
“The group is really strong and it’s good to be together. It’s important for them to be with us and not be in Manchester working at home.”
