Manchester United have been busy locking up key players for the long term. With more players committing their futures to the club, it could be interpreted as a sign that the managerial question might be answered soon. If that is the case, then perhaps Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is to get his interim label removed?
We’ll learn the answer to that question down the line. As for today, the club is reportedly nearing a new deal for midfielder Ander Herrera, after agreeing to a one year extension for Ashley Young (an announcement is expected soon). Last Thursday they announced a new five year extension for Anthony Martial.
The Daily Mail, in their article on Herrera on Young write that: “United have been in talks with representatives of both players since last year in the knowledge that Herrera and Young would be free agents at the end of this season.”
With the one year extension, the 33-year-old Young would enter his ninth year at the club. The versatile defender remains an integral part of the team, receiving first team minutes under both Jose Mourinho and Solskjaer this season.
As for Herrera, perhaps no player is consistently as rah-rah about United and being a member of the team as the 29-year-old Spaniard is. He was asked about his contract situation after the win at Leicester City on Sunday and he responded:
“If I deserve it, I will get it. I got the player of the year two years ago and, I cannot lie, I feel very good at the moment. I feel in form, I can run a lot and recover the ball and I feel good when I have it at my feet.”
Yes, as Herrera pointed out, he was the team’s player of the year in 2016-17, and this season he’s re-established himself as part of the starting midfield troika; along with Paul Pogba and Nemanja Matic.
Herrera and company next face a road league fixture at Fulham on Saturday.
