Liverpool, Arsenal, Manchester City and Chelsea are monitoring Southampton’s Virgil van Dijk ahead of a potential summer transfer window move. It’s looking like the Saints central defender is going to be among the most sought after names in English football this summer.
Of those four giant, big money clubs, Chelsea are leading the way, according to reports published today.
According to The Sun, the Blues have made an offer of £50m plus centre-half Andreas Christensen for Van Dijk, and Southampton are said to be considering the deal.
That’s quite the supposed offer from Stamford Bridge, and it’s going to take a blockbuster package in order to land the 25-year-old star once the summer transfer window opens. It’s going to be a seller’s market this summer with star player wages and transfer fees only increasing exponentially. Southampton will indeed cash in.
Liverpool are also very interested, and Reds club legend/youth team coach Steven Gerrard has publicly endorsed the idea.
“Who I think we need, I would go and try and bid for Van Dijk from Southampton,” Gerrard told BT Sport. “But we’ve had enough of their players so that will probably go down like a lead balloon.”
Very true- Anfield has certainly become St. Mary’s North since 2014, as the Reds keep utilizing the south coast club as a quasi-farm team.
Virgil van Dijk left Celtic in 2015 for Southampton, who reportedly beat off interest from Sunderland, Arsenal, Everton and West Brom. The Gunners were consistently linked with Van Dijk for much of 2014.
