Right before this past summer transfer window closed, Liverpool Football Club announced the signing of midfielder Naby Keita from RB Leipzig, with the move set for next summer when the player’s release clause kicks in.
Since the move was made, there’s been talk of Liverpool trying to work out a deal that gets the center mid over to Anfield come January transfer window.
After all, LFC could really use some help in the center of the pitch, just in case you haven’t heard.
Leipzig maintains it won’t be happening though, as they are adamant Keita stays put in the Bundesliga until next summer. RBL are currently competing in the UEFA Champions League competition, and the Liverpool FC hopes were that maybe they could acquire the 22-year-old should RBL be eliminated in the group stages.
Sporting director Ralf Rangnick says that won’t be the case however.
“Even if we should not reach the knockout stages of the Champions League, it would make no sense to allow Naby to join Liverpool earlier. We want to qualify for Europe again and we need Naby for that,” he said.
Leipzig are currently second in the German top flight, and thus currently in line to qualify for Europe from the Bundesliga top four next season. For more on Naby Keita and to view some of his highlights go here.
