Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita was taken to hospital tonight in Naples after injuring his back 19 minutes into his side’s 1-0 loss at Napoli in Champions League group stage action. According to an update posted on the club website:
“Keita was transferred to a local hospital with the club doctor, where – with the midfielder’s agreement – he underwent a number of precautionary health checks to assess his condition.”
Keita, who was stretchered off the pitch tonight, underwent a series of tests at Fuorigrotta Hospital. It is not known at this time when he’ll be released, but the hope is that he’ll be discharged on Thursday and able to fly home from Italy with the rest of the team tomorrow. Liverpool, who kicked off at 9 pm local tonight, are staying in town overnight.
Sunday brings a massive league fixture against Manchester City, a match-up between the two teams currently atop the table with 19 points. As of now it’s too early to tell whether or not Keita will be a doubt for the clash with the Premier League champions at Anfield.
“It’s his back, that’s what I’ve heard,” said Klopp. “I don’t know exactly the extent of it yet. We have to wait.”
