The Liverpool FC back line, central defenders in particular, have been an international punchline for quite some time. (Dejan Lovren especially so today)
No matter what team and sport you follow, Liverpool defenders make the perfect analogy for gross ineptitude at whatever specific position group that you’re paying attention to. It’s come to be the paradigm now for the old adage, your chain is only as strong as the weakest link.
Sure, some of this is hyperbole, as it’s a team game, but the numbers and stats do show that Liverpool is conceding goals at a historically bad rate.
This was all exacerbated as the Reds fell 4-1 to Tottenham Hotspur today at Wembley Stadium.
The Reds have conceded 16 goals in their last nine games, making this their worst defensive run from the beginning of a season since 1964. Liverpool have also now conceded more away goals this season than any other Premier League side.
The Anfield outfit has already conceded more away league goals in 5 games than when in the entire 2008-09 (14) season, where they finished runners-up. The blowout at the hands of Spurs probably eliminated Liverpool from the league title race, and they’ll now have to play for top four from here on out.
They’re now in ninth place, already 12 behind table toppers Manchester City.
That said, you knew that it was going to be a LOLiverpool kind of day on Twitter. Club fans, neutrals and supporters of rival clubs all got very colorful on the micro-blogging platform.
There were also plenty of shots taking at their arch-rivals United, and deservedly so because Red Devils manager Jose Mourinho inexplicably decided to park the bus against them and their extremely vulnerable defenses.

It’s as hard to defend Liverpool as it is for Liverpool to defend.
