It still remains to be seen who will be awarded the captaincy at Manchester United, but there are several players in the running, including goalkeeper David de Gea. With last year’s wearer of the arm band, Antonio Valencia, now off the team, contenders include the likes of Paul Pogba, Ashley Young and Chris Smalling. There will be a lot of action on United in terms of top four finish wagering, just like the kind of betting you can do at GTRCasino. Will United finish in the top four and qualify for Champions League? It’s an interesting and engaging bet to say the least.
As for De Gea, the announcement of his contract extension is reportedly imminent, and his new deal will supposedly make him both the highest paid player on the team, and the best paid shot-stopper in the world. The Spaniard has certainly earned it, winning the club’s player of the year award several times in recent years.
United’s No. 1 was vocal about his desire to wear the captain’s arm band at Old Trafford.
“I’ve been captain for some games,” he said after making his first appearance of the preseason, playing an hour in the 1-0 win over Inter Milan.
“Of course, it is amazing to be captain of a club like Manchester United and defend this badge. It’s amazing, so of course I’ll be really, really happy to be captain.”
United will next take on Tottenham Hotspur on Thursday in an International Champions Cup friendly. De Gea, who is likely to see some playing time in that clash, feels he’s established himself as a leader at United.
“It’s my ninth season, I feel like one of the most experienced players,” De Gea continued.
“I need to show that on the pitch and try to help the young guys know what Manchester United means and that’s important. We have to improve a lot. We are Manchester United; we need to fight for trophies.”
“When you put on this badge, that’s what it means – fight for everything, give your best and bring the team again to the top.”
