When it rains it pours with Chelsea, and right now it’s a torrential downpour. It’s not even October, and the Blues have suffered five losses already. The latest setback came today as the English giants fell 2-1 at Porto in the UEFA Champions League; ruining the homecoming for Chelsea Manager Jose Mourinho.
Mourinho, who hails from Portugal, led FC Porto to a Champions League title in 2003-04, but today saw only disappointment and defeat.
In the eyes of Mourinho, it was just two “ridiculous” moments that did his side in.
“We watch dozens and dozens of repetitions of Porto taking corners. We were completely ready for that and in a moment when the game is under control we concede a goal that is ridiculous,” Mourinho said.
“They hit the post from a similar mistake. Apart from that the game was balanced. Two ridiculous moments and we were punished.”
“The result doesn’t mean that you played bad. The big mistakes we made twice doesn’t mean that the team defended badly.”
It’s shocking how fast and how far Chelsea has collapsed. They’re struggling in both Europe and domestically. Mourinho has always made “great copy,” but in 2015 he’s been even more interesting and compelling than usual. The Special One’s Premier League title defense is not going so well, and as the losses pile up across all competitions, he’s certainly saying the types of things that will make the media pay attention to him.
Unfortunately, it’s not for the right reasons. Chelsea are currently in a lot of trouble, not just in the Champions League group stages, but also the Premier League, where they reside in 14th place.
