There was actually a winner in the 1-1 draw between Chelsea and Liverpool today- table toppers Manchester City. It’s the best possible result for Pep Guardiola and his side, as it saw two title contenders miss out on obtaining an additional two points from this contest.
Chelsea defender Gary Cahill seemed to agree when asked about this topic.
“I’d say so,” Cahill replied when asked if the draw benefited City.
“If we were in their shoes we’d be delighted. It’s a shame but we’ve got some more games coming up now. (Anfield) is clearly a difficult place to come, so we’ll take the point and keep going. It was important we didn’t lose today.”
City are five points up on Manchester United, with a game in hand heading into their clash with Huddersfield Town. Tottenham Hotspur dropped two points in a draw with West Bromwich Albion today so that was another draw in which Man City were the de facto winners today.
Gary Cahill went on to say that the Blues were deserving of the draw and disappointed that they couldn’t get all three points. Former Chelsea man Mohamed Salah opened the scoring in the 65′ and Liverpool led for 20 minutes until Willian equalized in the 85′.
“On reflection, I thought in the second half we deserved to equal the game up. They had some good spells in the first half and we came on strong in the second half, especially late on,” the Blues Captain said.
“We made a few changes and had a few (crosses) flash across the box. They caused us problems at times and I’m sure we did them. We’re delighted that we got back into it and it’s a shame we couldn’t get the three.”
