Chelsea manager Antonio Conte fought through tears as he gave a very emotional interview regarding the death of Fiorentina Captain Davide Astori. The tragic event, which transpired overnight, led to the cancellation of all Serie A competition today.
Astori was only 31 years old, obviously in elite health, but passed away due to cardiac arrest last night. A statement posted on Fiorentina’s website reads: “For the terrible and delicate situation, and above all for the respect of his family, the sensitivity of the insiders is called for.”
Udine prosecutor Antonio De Nicolo said:
“The belief is that the player died of a cardiac arrest by natural causes. It is strange that such a thing should happen to a professional who is so closely monitored without there being any warning signs.”
The Antonio Conte interview on Davide Astori video is embedded below:
“He was a great player but especially a fantastic guy,” said a very emotional Conte.
“I stay really close to his family at this moment because he was only 31. It’s very difficult to explain this situation to his wife, his parents and daughter.”
‘This is a tragedy. It’s very difficult, at this moment, to find the right words for the family,” Conte continued.
Conte managed Astori for the Italian national team from 2014-2016.
