“Agent driven” is a phrase commonly used in the transfer rumor world. It usually refers to transfer gossip revolving around deals that most likely won’t happen, but are getting a lot of traction in the media anyway due to an agent propping up his client. Typically, these refer to stories planted by agents in the media behind the scenes as a way to gain leverage in negotiations, and hence a bigger pay day for both player and representation.
Thus, what Christophe Henrotay, the agent of Chelsea goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois, did is not “agent driven” in the classical sense, but these are obviously agent driven remarks.
Henrotay claims that he met with Real Madrid, and that they are interested in acquiring Thibaut Courtois.
“Obviously the biggest clubs are interested in Thibaut, and that includes the reigning European champions,” he told Sport Magazine.
“He is a goalkeeper who wins you games, wins you trophies. I meet regularly with Real Madrid’s directors and Thibaut’s situation is evaluated. My role is to keep him informed of the situation.”
“Of course, Thibaut is interested in the biggest clubs.”
Chelsea off-loaded Courtois’ back-up, Asmir Begovic this summer, who went on to sign with Bournemouth. Courtois is under contract until 2019.
Real have been linked to goalkeepers this summer, with AC Milan’s Gianluigi Donnarumma often coming up in transfer rumors. The other name you commonly hear is Manchester United’s David de Gea, as we’ve heard that name incessantly since the end of the 2014-15 season.
