Former Sunderland midfielder Adam Johnson was convicted of one count of sexual activity with a child but was cleared on a second count. Once the England international pled guilty to charges of sexual activity with a 15-year-old girl a couple weeks ago, the club sacked him.
Sunderland then went public about the termination of Johnson’s contract and you knew then that his football career was over. Today, Johnson has much much bigger problems than the end of his football career. He’s sentenced to six years in prison.
According to the Daily Mail, Premier League academy players will be made to attend social media workshops in aftermath of Adam Johnson child sex scandal.
No further comment is needed/expected/warranted as the lurid, scandalous details of Adam Johnson’s criminal actions were detailed by the media as the trial unfolded. From Press Association, via FOX Soccer.
After Johnson was jailed at Bradford Crown Court, restrictions were lifted which have prevented the reporting of the 28-year-old’s arrest in relation to alleged extreme pornographic images, thought to be bestiality-related, found on his computer.
The arrest was mentioned in hearings at Durham Crown Court prior to Johnson’s trial. Durham Police confirmed he has now been released from his bail in relation to this matter and no further action will be taken.
It is understood the images found on the computer were of a “jokey” nature.
Sex crimes dominate headlines in any news cycle. Combine this egregious situation with what a boring, slow news week this is, due to the international break and the Adam Johnson news will get even more coverage than you would normally expect.
Sportswear firm Adidas also discontinued their their relationship with Johnson, as they confirmed in an email to CNN that their sponsorship deal with the player was terminated in the wake of his guilty pleas entered earlier.
