Brian Kelly will be the Head Notre Dame football Coach next season- let’s just get that out of the way right now.
Yes, in spite of today’s revelations, and regardless of how the team finishes out a dreadful 2016, Kelly will survive, so although that’s a very unpopular outcome right now, it is still the most likely scenario.
Kelly has strong support from Athletic Director Jack Swarbrick, so he will return, in spite of the NCAA ruling today vacating all his wins from the 2012 and 2013 seasons.
Notre Dame immediately issued a statement with their intention to appeal today’s NCAA decision, which drops the official record of Brian Kelly at ND from 58-30 to 38-30.
Kelly said at his weekly press availability today that he knew vacated wins were a possibility ever since he and the other Notre Dame officials met with the NCAA several months ago. He said he doesn’t believe he has any culpability in this case and he has no reason to believe he won’t be back as head coach next season either.
The NCAA placed the program on academic probation today because a former student athletic trainer committed academic misconduct by doing substantial course work for two players, and impermissibly helped six others.
The Division I Committee on Infractions panel put Notre Dame on probation for a year and ordered a $5,000 fine, penalties the school agreed with. There were no bowl or scholarship punishments. Brian Kelly and Notre Dame found the vacated wins penalty to be excessive and that is the punitive measure that they are appealing.
