Your next Cleveland Browns starting quarterback? Rex Grossman.
This is not a drill.
Look at this tweet from Jason LaCanfora, formerly of the NFL Network, currently with CBS Sports.
Browns cutting QBs today opens up a spot for Matt Schaub. If they don’t get him, then Rex Grossman is the next man up
— Jason La Canfora (@JasonLaCanfora) March 12, 2014
Yes, it’s true, if the Brownies swing and miss on Schaub, you know what’s left in the NFL QB free agent market? Rex Grossman that’s who. Which would lock up a quarterback for Cleveland at the #4 pick in May’s NFL Draft. Perhaps Cleveland will even trade up to get the guy they want.
How did this happen?
First the Browns cut Brandon Weeden, a failed first-round pick in 2012 who desperately wanted out. After releasing that bust, they also cut toes with Jason Campbell, who was due to be paid a $250,000 roster bonus if still on the team after 3:00 p.m. CST Wednesday. The only quarterback currently on the roster are Brian Hoyer and Alex Tanney. And given the history of Kyle Shanahan and Rex Grossman, it’s only a matter of time before Sexy Rexy makes Cleveland rock.
Which would, hopefully for their sake, hand the QB1 designation to Johnny Manziel, Blake Bortles, Teddy Bridgewater at pick number four. At least one, and perhaps two of the three, will still be available. However, from March until mid-May, you might hear Cleveland say “Rex Grossman is our quarterback.”
