Many Chicago Bears fans really want to see the team draft a new quarterback to replace Jay Cutler next month.
Many Chicago Bears fans really don’t know what they’re talking about. Yes, Cutler still makes plenty of mistakes, and when he does make them, he makes them big. However, he’s still way better than half the QB1s in this league and he’s just coming off his most efficient season ever.
The proverbial light, or at least his version of it, turned on this past fall. Secondly, the primary team needs are OT, LB (not so much anymore as this was filled via free agency), and pass rusher. Thirdly, and perhaps most importantly, this is a very weak class of signal callers. It’s a weak draft overall, and at every position other than Defensive Line especially.
You can’t go QB at #11 this year. ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. has done a few media conference calls, and he talked Chicago Bears in depth on all of them. He mentioned Jack Conklin from Michigan State University as a viable option.
“Do you take a guy like Jack Conklin there who could be a major addition to your line?” Kiper asked rhetorically.
“Would Paxton Lynch from Memphis or Carson Wentz from North Dakota State, I gotta believe you got to take the offensive lineman, and if you want to take a young quarterback down the line maybe Dak Prescott (this interview was before the arrest) 3rd or 4th round, maybe Connor Cook second or third round, see where Christian Hackenebrg falls.”

“An interesting late round pick to me will be Brandon Allen from Arkanasas, he did a great job there, I think he’s a late round pick who could play in this league. We’ll see where Cody Kessler ends up I would go late day 2 early to mid day 3, rather than the 11th pick overall,” Kiper concluded.
I would have to agree with Kiper on this. Don’t even look at a QB until round four at the earliest. That’s what I would do if I were Chicago Bears GM Ryan Pace. None of the names he rattled off intrigued me, at all, except for Kessler.
Sure, the USC Trojans signal caller has his draw-backs and negatives, but compared to the others…I wouldn’t be interested in tany of the others.
I wouldn’t see a problem with the Chicago Bears going Spartan-Trojan War in their second hometown NFL Draft. Take Conklin at #11, nab Kessler in a later round; he’ll be there.
