Chelsea may not be winning games, but Manager Jose Mourinho is certainly winning press conferences; sort of. Mourinho has always made “great copy,” but in 2015 he’s been even more interesting and compelling than usual. The Special One’s Premier League title defense is not going so well, but he’s certainly saying the types of things that will make the media pay attention to him.
Just yesterday, Mourinho fired a blatant shot at Arsenal Manager Arsene Wenger that defined passive-aggression. Today, he explained his 2-2 draw with Newcastle with sound bite phrases such as “I am not a magician,” “so poor,” and “so bad.”
“We were so poor, so bad in the first half,” Mourinho told BBC Sport on Saturday.
“It is possible to win the game with a good period but when you don’t play for 45 minutes it’s very difficult.”
“I told the players at half-time that I have no time to ask them why they were so bad. I want to try to understand because I don’t accept it.”
The Blues are currently in 15th place, having taken just 8 points from their first seven. They have a -3 goal differential on the season. So where do Chelsea go from here? What are the answers? What adjustments can Mourinho make that would actually work?
“I am not a magician,” he added. “I tried my best for the team. At half-time I said I was sorry I only had three subs as I wanted to change six.
“You cannot say that I react negatively, I complain, I am a critic. I laugh about it.”
Chelsea is eight points about league leaders Manchester United.
