Chelsea defender John Terry, a legendary 34-year-old English international, congratulated Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney on his record 50th goal as a member of the England National Team. (Here’s the video of the goal, and Rooney’s post match soundbites)
Terry posted the following on his official Instagram account:
There’s been plenty of speculation this summer about the future of John Terry, a member of a very exclusive club of footballers who have spent their entire career with one club.
Earlier this summer, Terry insisted that he is not ready to leave Chelsea right now and feels that he has two more good years left in him.
He also stated that he will not following in the footsteps of former teammates Petr Cech and Frank Lampard and join another Premier League club. Maybe Terry will instead emulate Steven Gerrard and Didier Drogba by heading to an Major League Soccer side in the twilight of his career? Who knows, it’s another discussion for another time.
Said John Terry while on tour with in the club in Washington, D.C:
“I am 35 at Christmas.”
“So hopefully I’ll be around for another couple of years. I realise one day that my career will come to an end so I want to give everything these next few years.
“People like me and Steven want to play of course. That is our natural instincts. When you play your whole career, it’s hard.”
“Petr Cech was a model professional last year and that is why he got the move he wanted, because of how well he reacted around the place.”
“I’ve seen players go the other way but I’d go down the Petr route and continue giving everything to the squad.”
“If I then felt Chelsea were going to release me or thought I had nothing else to give – but still thought I could play – then I would want to continue to play. But that would not be in the Premier League for sure.”
