Michigan State Spartans avoid upset at the Barn

Tom Izzo

This one truly was a barn-burner.

Coming off a five-game hot streak in the Big Ten, Michigan State was looking to keep its position at the top of the conference, but the Golden Gophers had a different idea in mind. The first half alone had 16 lead changes and 4 ties. Minnesota’s Ralph Sampson III showed off his creativity with a variety of baby hooks and shots in the paint. The battle between Sampson III and MSU’s Adreian Payne became so hot at one point in the game that a double foul was issued.

These big men don’t play around in the Big Ten when it comes to being physical.

Michigan Proving Itself on the Road

tim hardaway

Hoisting 38 three-point shots on the road isn’t necessarily the best recipe for success, especially in the Big Ten, where there are no gimmes away from home. But for Michigan, a team that has struggled on the road much of the season, 14 of their 38 three-point attempts found net Tuesday night and that was enough for a, 67-55, overtime win at Northwestern.

Once again, super frosh Trey Burke led the way for the Wolverines, scoring 19 points and grabbing six rebounds. It was Burke’s quickness and court vision that frustrated NU’s 1-3-1 zone throughout regulation time, and it was Burke’s senior-like composure that KO’d the Wildcats in overtime.

Illini Win Bowl Games in Back to Back Years- 1st Time in School History

illini-rose-bowl

For the second year in a row, the Illini found themselves with a college basketball game scheduled at the exact same time as a college football game. Their bowl selection led to the scheduling conflict.

Last year, they won both as the football team crushed Robert Griffin III’s Baylor Bears in the Texas Bowl while the hoopsters beat the Iowa Hawkeyes handily.

This year Illinois football beat UCLA 20-13 in the Kraft Fight Hunger bowl while the cagers went to Purdue and…let’s not talk about that one.

Indianapolis Colts Avoid Winless Season, Won’t Play Peyton Manning

The Indianapolis Colts won’t go 0-16. We know that much.

The Colts’ 27-13 victory against division rival Tennessee on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium — Indy’s first win of the 2011 season — prevented the franchise from going down in NFL history with the 1976 Tampa Bay Buccaneers or the 2008 Detroit Lions, the only two teams to ever finish a season without a win.

But beyond the relief of finally breaking through for a win, the Colts still face some questions as they prepare to close out the final two weeks of 2011. Vice Chairman Bill Polian announced after the game that quarterback Peyton Manning would not appear in either of Indy’s last two games against Houston and Jacksonville. Also — believe it or not — there’s a legitimate race in the Andrew Luck Sweepstakes again.
